70 Years of Maison Jean Rousseau: A Vision of Innovation and Sustainability

For 70 years, Maison Jean Rousseau has seamlessly combined traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation.

The company upholds its artisanal roots while exploring new techniques and collaborating with creative talents. This approach ensures the development of products that are both forward-thinking and sustainably crafted.

Material Innovation

Maison Jean Rousseau operates its own mini-tannery, employing a team of twelve specialists who master seven distinct crafts. These artisans and colorists continuously develop and test new colors and finishes. In 2021, we introduced an innovative water-repellent finish for our alligator watch straps, using a unique blend of materials and components that make them water-resistant. These straps can endure up to 60 minutes of immersion while preserving their color, texture, shape, and comfort.

Maison Jean Rousseau uses high-quality materials and continuously strives to enhance its processing methods to ensure the quality of each piece. By combining precise techniques with modern technologies, the company offers meticulously finished leathers that meet the highest industry standards. Innovation extends beyond color and finish to include the exploration of new raw materials, such as cork and sustainably sourced salmon leather from ICTYOS.

Product Innovation

Maison Jean Rousseau introduces new models of straps and leather goods each year to meet the evolving needs of its clientele. These products feature innovative elements such as “quick” bars for easy strap changes, anti-sweat linings for added comfort, and edge-stitched finishes for greater durability. The collections regularly include cutting-edge designs, such as water-resistant “Atlantis” leather straps, hand-stitched pieces with platinum or gold threads, and “100% leather-free” alternatives made from materials like Alcantara, kimono remnants from Maison Sawaya, or Sericyne silk, produced naturally in the Cévennes, France. Each order provides artisans with a new opportunity to push the boundaries of their creativity and expertise.

Project Innovation and Sustainability

Maison Jean Rousseau focuses on quality in every project, whether for B2B or B2C markets. The technical department reviews each project to create custom products, from watch straps to leather goods like cases, placemats, and keychains. This approach ensures they can meet different needs and provide unique, high-quality items.

Sustainability is a key aspect of this approach. Rigorous training policies are in place to develop employees’ skills while ensuring their safety. All substances used in our ateliers are subject to strict analysis carried out in collaboration with occupational medicine and the Health, Safety and Working Conditions Committee (CHSCT).

For traceability, Maison Jean Rousseau follows standards for animal breeding and treatment by complying with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and REACH regulations. The hides are checked by Fish & Wildlife to ensure they meet breeding conditions. The Maison also plans to join the CTC (French Leather Technical Center) in tracking the origins of goatskin and cowhide. This system will provide a complete history of the material by identifying individual animals, their breeders, and the conditions in which they were raised.

Anaïs Bordier, Brand Manager, outlines Maison Jean Rousseau’s vision for the future: “We are committed to evolving our craftsmanship in a sustainable way, taking into account both environmental concerns and the well-being of our team. This means embracing new techniques, continually improving our methods, and leveraging our creativity to deliver exceptional service to our clients.

As we celebrate 70 years, we look to the future with the same passion and dedication that have shaped our reputation in watchmaking and leather goods. Our ongoing focus on innovation and sustainability drives our efforts, ensuring that our legacy endures while meeting today’s challenges.
